Advance reservation is allowed usually up to 90 days before the date of journey. We recommend passengers to book their tickets early enough to increase the likelihood of getting a confirmed berth. If confirmed berth is not available at the time of booking, your reservation status will show either RAC (Reservation against Cacellation) or WL (Waiting List).
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) status indicates that a passenger does not have a reserved berth, but he has sitting accommodation in the train. Depepending on the length of the waiting queue, there is a likelihood that his reservation will promoted to a confirmed berth when one becomes available due to last minute cancellations usually taking place towards the date of journey. RAC ticket holders can board the train and can sit on the two side chairs. If a berth becomes available due to cancellation, one RAC holder will get the berth, and the other RAC holder can convert the two side chairs into a single berth.
Waiting List (WL) status means that the passenger cannot be guaranteed any berth or sitting accommodation in the train. If sufficient number of confirmed or RAC ticket holders cancel their reservations, they will be accommodated. The maximum length of the waiting queue for each train is determined by railway officials, and once the maximum number of wait listed tickets have been issued, the ticketing system refuses any further reservation requests and responds with REGRET status. One cannot purchase a ticket with REGRET status.
Railway reservations with RAC or WL status have two numbers ? WL25/WL18, WL15/RAC12, etc. The first number indicates the reservation status at the time of booking (also known as booking status), while the second number indicates the current position (also known as current status). The status WL25/WL18 means that the passenger's position was at wait list 25 at the time of purchasing the ticket, while the current position has improved to wait list 18 following 7 cancellations.
What does RS mean, for example, RS5 10? RS stands for RAC sitting. RS5 10 indicates reservation in S5 coach, berth number 10. RAC passengers can board a reserved coach for overnight journey, however they are only assured sitting accommodation on the berths. Since two passengers share one single berth, both are allocated the same berth number. A side lower berth can be converted into a single sleeper bed after 9:00 pm. The side upper berth is allocated to a third RAC passenger. The side berths are shorter than the berths in the main compartments.
Indian Railway passengers can check the progress of their RAC/WL reservations by using 10-digit PNR numbers printed on the top left corners of their tickets. You can check this online by visiting PNRStatus.info. It is easy for railway passengers to confuse the different legends that appear on their reservation tickets or PNR status. The table below explains the various legends used by Indian Railways to communicate PNR status in brief.
| Symbol | Description |
|---|---|
| CAN/MOD | Cancelled or Modified |
| CNF/Confirmed | Confirmed (Coach and berth number are assigned after chart preparation) |
| CK | Tatkal quota |
| CKWL | Tatkal waiting list (different from normal waiting list, which when moves up goes to RAC category, whereas a passenger gets a confirmed berth when a CKWL moves up) |
| RAC | Reservation against Cancellation |
| WL # | Waiting List number |
| RLWL | Remote Location Wait List |
| GNWL | General Wait List |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Wait List |
| REGRET/WL | No more booking is permitted |
| RELEASED | Ticket not cancelled, but alternative accommodation provided |
| R # # | RAC coach number and berth number |
Here is an example of how the result of a PNR status enquiry looks like. The first table shows journey details including train number, train name, boarding date, from station, to station, station reserved upto, boarding point, and class of reservation. The second table shows reservation status of all passengers. Booking status and current status for each passenger are shown in separate columns. This table also shows the current charting status. If chart is prepared, current status of passengers will not change any further.
Online ticketing operations of the Indian Railways is handled by its subsidiary Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which allows passengers to check status of their railway reservations also through mobile phone and landline phone. Alternatively you can call 139 from your BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Vodafone etc landlines. Most telecom service providers support 139. If you have internet connection at home, you will probably prefer to go online to check IRCTC PNR status of your railway reservation. The advantage is that you do not need to pay any SMS or call charges. Another advantage is that you can quickly print / email the reservation status.
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. A unique 10-digit PNR is assigned to each railway reservation whether it is done online or by visiting a railway reservation counter. You can easily locate PNR number on the top left corner of a railway ticket. To know the current status of a railway reservation, a passenger must quote the PNR number assigned to him/her. Please note that the status of a single RAC/WL reservation can change several times showing a gradual progress. The image below shows PNR on an Indian Railways ticket.
A PNR is generated by the Indian Railways automated system known as CRS (Central Reservation System) only after a passenger provides information such as passenger name, gender, age, berth preference, train number, date of journey, class of travel, contact information, and so on. A passenger provides these details online or by writing them on a printed reservation slip.
A passenger who books his ticket online using http://www.irctc.co.in can locate the PNR number on his e-ticket or i-ticket. He can view and print the e-ticket or i-ticket after logging in to his IRCTC account. If the booking was done from an account not owned by him, he can contact the appropriate person for a copy of the e-ticket or i-ticket. After a booking is completed online, IRCTC also sends an SMS along with the 10-digit PNR number. A sample SMS would look like, "PNR:6603462007, TRAIN:12313, DOJ:22-06-12, 3A, SDAH TO NDLS, SUMIT AGARWAL, B6 56, FARE:1535, SC:20+PG CHGS." One can provide a mobile number of one's choice while filling the booking details online. This mobile number can be different from the mobile number registered with one's IRCTC account.
Once an advance reservation is complete, the CRS issues a PNR, which remains the same regardless of any further changes made to the reservation details. However an exception is made if a multiple passenger reservation is split with some of the passengers cancelling or changing to a different itinerary.
Although PNRs were originally introduced for air travel, they are now also being used for bookings of railways, hotels, car rental, etc. Some of the popular phrases for PNR status in the context of railway reservation are IRCTC PNR status, railway PNR status, Indian Railways PNR Status, PNR Status IRCTC, rail PNR, railway PNR, etc.
Have you missed your train? It is possible to cancel a train reservation after chart preparation. You need to file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) for the same.
A passenger can file a TDR if he was not able to perform the journey due to any of the following reasons.
IRCTC will process the refund claim with the Railway Administration and refund granted by the Railway shall be credited to your account. Refund claims under below clause may require at least 90 days or more for processing.
In case train is cancelled by the Indian Railways due to accidents, breaches or floods, bandh or rail roko agitation etc., full refund of the fare of entire booked journey will be granted. Online cancellation can be done up to 72 hours. In case of train running late by more than three hours and the passenger not performing journey on this account, full refund is permitted subject to the condition that the ticket is surrendered/TDR obtained in case of i-ticket. If it is an e-ticket, the passenger should file online or email IRCTC within the prescribed time limits. In case of any problem in e-ticket TDR filing, please email etickets@irctc.co.in.
For filing TDR online, logon to the IRCTC website, click My Transactions > File TDR in the left navigation bar. Only those PNRs whose date of journey is less than 30 days will be listed and shall be eligible for applying TDR. Below are some sample screenshots.
You can visit the following official page to learn all about TDR filing, TDR rules, refund rules, step-by-step procedure for filing a TDR online, and more.
